Human Genome Diversity Group

The interests of our research are focused on the human genome diversity analysis in order to infer the processes responsible for this diversity and try to establish the consequences of the human genetic variability. Thus, our main research lines are focused on aspects of human genome diversity, population genetics, genome variation and disease susceptibility, and genome evolution and diseases.

Research lines:

  • Human population genetics: Concerning population processes that have modelled the human genetic diversity, we have focused our research on the use of molecular tools to reconstruct the human population history through the phylogeny of genetic markers. Our interest has been focused on the genetic consequences at population level of human migrations and admixtures.
  • Human genome adaptation: Concerning genomic processes that have modelled the human genetic diversity, our research has have been focused on the relationship between human diversity and complex traits, including complex diseases. The genetic analysis in human populations of genes of biomedical interest might shed light on the evolution of these genes.


Main projects

  • 1.

    Population genetics of North Africans

    The main goal of the project is reconstruct the genetic history of North African groups and correlate it with cultural and linguistic parameters.

  • 2.

    Population history of European Roma

    The purpose of the project is to unravel the demographic and adaptive processes that have modelled the genetic diversity found in European Roma, aka Gypsies

  • 3.

    Adaptation and history of Basques

    The aim of the project is to clarify the genetic outlier position of Basques within the European landscape and try to quantify and explain their genetic differences
