Josep Carreras LEUKAEMIA Research Institute (IRJC - LEUKAEMIA)
The Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute (IJC), a CERCA center of the Generalitat de Catalunya, was established with the aim of promoting biomedical research and the development of personalized medicine for malignant blood diseases and, especially, leukemia. It is an unprecedented center that, with the work and rigor of researchers from around the world, uses the most innovative technologies to try to beat leukemia and other malignant blood diseases.
Every year about 6,400 people are diagnosed with leukemia in Spain. On the other hand, other malignant blood diseases such as lymphomas or multiple myeloma affect 10,500 and 3,000 new patients respectively each year in our country. As for children, leukemia is the most common childhood cancer with an incidence of 30% of pediatric cancers.
Leukemias, along with other malignant blood diseases, are one of the most important challenges in the study and treatment of human cancers. In fact, they have represented and continue to represent a model of curable cancer. It is not surprising then that the two cancers that we are currently capable of curing in a large proportion of patients are acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children and Hodgkin's lymphoma.
